Methods and Applications of Operations Research in Natural Resources

Operations research has been developed in conjunction with natural resources for four decades. We analyze these developments in the areas of forestry, mining, agriculture, and fishing.
We cover the challenges posed in each area to capture the problems in realistic models,data acquisition and reliability, data handling and communications, solving the models through algorithms that are computationally feasible and robust. Very importantly, how to reach the decision makers. We discuss what are the peculiar characteristics in each area, stressing the success in  actual applications. Finally , we present what are considered at the moment open problems, not yet solved both in theory and for practical applications.
